Senate Candidate Angela Nelson Pledges to Go Beyond Strongly Worded Letters
After metro surge, and with Trump threatening to send ICE back to Minnesota, Nelson will fight to keep ICE out of schools

Coon Rapids, MN — On Monday, DFL Senate candidate Angela Nelson (SD35) and Senator Steve Cwodzinski met with educators to discuss the impact of last year’s metro surge on their classrooms.
During the discussion, educators emphasized that they need more than strongly worded letters from their elected officials. They raised concerns about rising healthcare costs and insurance premiums, which make it harder for teachers to focus on their classrooms than on whether they can afford medical care.
Educators also described how ICE operations disrupted learning environments and disproportionately affected students of color whose families were targeted by federal law enforcement. They emphasized the need for legislators who will stand with their communities, demand accountability, and take meaningful action when students and families are put at risk.
Last session, when comprehensive legislation to protect Minnesotans and hold ICE accountable came before the Senate, Republican Senator Jim Abeler voted no. Abeler opposed provisions that would have allowed schools, daycares and colleges to refuse federal agents access to school facilities without a warrant.
“As educators, students, and families have made clear, Minnesotans are tired of politicians who offer empty words instead of meaningful action,” said Nelson. “When executive overreach threatens our communities, we need leaders who will do more than write strongly worded letters. I will fight to pass laws that will protect our students, support our educators, and hold those in power accountable. Every child deserves to feel safe in their classroom, and I will work to make sure our schools remain places where students can learn without fear.”
